The Full Story

The National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) launched its series of 13 Retirement Planning Seminars yesterday (August 10), at Medallion Hall Hotel in Kingston.

The seminars, to be held islandwide, are aimed at educating Jamaicans about planning for retirement.

Persons approaching retirement, as well as workers and self-employed persons under the age of 65 years from the informal and microenterprise sectors, are being targeted.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Colette Roberts-Risden, who launched the series on behalf of Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Shahine Robinson, commended the NCSC on the initiative.

She said the seminars are very important, as persons are living longer and they need to know how to plan for their retirement.

“Persons must become educated on how to retire successfully. Studies increasingly show that many retirees find themselves facing poverty as they are not able to maintain themselves during their retirement years. These seminars are timely as the Ministry seeks to encourage more Jamaicans to develop an action plan for retirement,” the Permanent Secretary said.

“It is critical that we get ready for it (retirement) by determining our needs, setting a timeline and planning for it,” she added.

The seminars are being held under the theme ‘On the Road to Retirement: Activate Your Action Plan Now’,  and participants will be provided with information on how to strategically and realistically plan for all aspects of retirement – finance, health, housing and the psychosocial impact associated with this time of life.

Some 70 persons from various agencies, including HEART Trust/NTA, Excelsior Community College, Registrar General’s Department (RGD) and the Social Development Commission (SDC) attended the first seminar.

Presenters at the seminar included representatives from BPM Financial Limited, Guardian life Limited, Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League Limited, National Commercial Bank (NCB), National Housing Trust (NHT) and the RGD.

The next seminar is scheduled to take place on August 18 at the Church of God of Prophecy, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.
