The Full Story

Residents of Manchester and surrounding parishes to benefit from a Health Fair and Men’s Health Symposium, which will be held on Thursday, July 31, at the Mandeville Seventh Day Adventist Church.

The event, being organized by the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) will commence at 9:30 a.m. and will focus on heart disease.

Programme Organiser for Health at the NCSC, Cassandra Morrison, told JIS News that the regional is aimed at increasing awareness of preventable heart conditions and stroke, and to encourage early detection.

“The Council wants persons to know the signs and symptoms very early,” she stated.

She said that while the event is for the entire family, it is particularly targeted at men. She noted that while women will go to the doctor and take their medication, “men are sometimes neglectful of their health and this is an ideal way of reaching them.”

Mrs. Morrison informed that persons will be treated to free medical checks including glucose, hypertension, and eye tests, and given free medication where applicable.

The health fair and symposium will also sensitise persons about the Chikungunya virus that presents symptoms similar to the dengue fever, such as high fever and muscle ache, and how to take precautions against the disease.
