The Full Story

The National Child Month Committee (NCMC) will coordinate the planting of over 90 assorted trees on Friday, May 23, as part of its Action Day activities.

Action Day is a calendar event during Child Month that encourages children to give back to their communities.

“The day, which is the youth equivalent to Labour Day, creates an opportunity for schools, clubs, church groups and children islandwide to do something for their community, thus promoting good values and community spirit. This year we will be planting trees,” Chairperson of the Action Day Sub-committee, Vivienne DaCosta, told JIS News.

Each year the NCMC selects a national project which is the main activity for the day. This year, the Committee, through sponsorship from Jamaica Producers Group, will be planting 56 ornamental and fruit trees around the verges of the Robert Schuman Roundabout in Agualta Vale, St. Mary as the National Project for Action Day.

The remaining trees will be distributed to schools and youth clubs.  “Schools, Youth Clubs and Churches are encouraged to get their children and youth involved in activities in their communities,” Mrs. DaCosta said.

Trees to be planted include Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Soursop, Pomegranate, Poinciana, Poui and Poorman’s Orchid.

The day’s event will start with an opening ceremony at the St. Mary Recreational and Social Centre (Jamaica Producers Sports Club) starting at 9:00 a.m. His Worship, Councillor Levan A. Freeman, Mayor of Port Maria, will be the keynote speaker.

Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica Producers Group, Jeffery Hall, and Member of Parliament for St. Mary, South East, Dr. Winston Green, will bring greetings. Other representatives from Jamaica Producers and the NCMC will be on hand to assist with the activities.

Action Day 2014 will culminate the NCMC activities for Child Month, which was observed under the theme: ‘Parents Take Responsibility: Break the Cycle’.
