The Full Story

The National Child Month Committee (NCMC), in partnership with the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches, hosted a National Day of Prayer for Children and Families, on May 29.

This was held at the Eastwood Park New Testament Church of God in Kingston, where several students and teachers representing schools from across the Corporate Area, representatives of churches, government officials and other stakeholders united in prayer to underscore their commitment to the holistic well-being of Jamaica’s youngest citizens.

First Vice Chair of the NCMC, Dr. Michelle Campbell, told the gathering that the theme for this year’s Child Month, ‘Stand Up, Speak Out…Protect the Rights of Our Children’, seeks to raise awareness among the general public, policymakers and stakeholders about the challenges confronting children in various contexts, including but not limited to education, health, protection from violence, and access to basic needs, so that strategies can be identified to address them.

“The Day of Prayer for our nation’s children and families, therefore, seeks to garner divine intervention and blessings for the protection, well-being, and future prospects of children and families,” Dr. Campbell said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Education Officer for Curriculum and Support Services at the Ministry of Education and Youth, Dr. Clover Hamilton Flowers, conveyed the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing the holistic development of children.

She emphasised the Ministry’s dedication to supporting the comprehensive growth of every child.

Senior Pastor of the Eastwood Park Road New Testament Church of God, Bishop Dr. Clement Clarke, in his address, said that through prayer, reflection, and concerted efforts, Jamaicans should create a more a supportive and nurturing environment for Jamaica’s children.

The Day’s event was punctuated by prayers offered by Ministry officials, church leaders and performances by schools, such as the Danny Williams School for the Deaf, Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf and Immaculate Conception High School.
