As of today (June 30), the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) on Slipe Pen Road in Kingston will be extending its opening hours to 6:00 p.m., so as to accommodate persons wanting to donate blood after work.
In addition, the blood collection centre at the Port Antonio Hospital in Portland will be extending its opening hours to 5:00 p.m. and will also be opened this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sandra Brown, Communications Officer at the NBTS told JIS News that the move came in response to the urgent need for blood at the nation’s blood bank, which currently has less than a sixth of the supply required to meet the daily demand.
She said that for the moment, the NBTS was not considering opening on Saturday. “We are waiting to see how it will work out having extended hours,” she said.
“We are hoping that by giving persons an opportunity to come during the after hours, it will motivate many more persons to donate blood. We really need to top up our supplies at this point in time,” she added.Miss Brown said the NBTS would facilitate small groups from workplaces during extended hours.
For the future, she said the NBTS would seek to work with the other collection centres at the various hospitals to see if they too, would offer extended hours to the public.
In the meantime, the NBTS will be having its general staff meeting next Tuesday (July 5) and will not open until 10:00 a.m.
