The National Water Commission (NWC) has collected $900 million in outstanding payments since the entity’s disconnection drive commenced in late 2020.
President, Mark Barnett, who noted that some 20,700 accounts in arrears are being targeted, said the figure includes $384 million collected between May and July from 9,000 customers, whose service was subsequently restored.
“It may not seem much compared to what our receivables are, but I think with a consistent approach the effort is definitely going to be bearing fruits in a few months,” Mr. Barnett said.
He was speaking during the NWC’s virtual quarterly media briefing, on Thursday (September 2).
Meanwhile, Mr. Barnett said the entity will not be disconnecting service to clients whose accounts are in arrears, during the no-movement days.
Prime Minister, the Most. Hon Andrew Holness, announced the extension of the no movement days by two weeks to reduce the latest surge in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases.
The days are Sunday, September 5; Monday, September 6; Tuesday, September 7; Sunday, September 12; Monday, September 13; and Tuesday, September 14.
Mr. Barnett warned, however, that on days following the lockdown periods, “we will be coming at you, once you haven’t paid”.
He encouraged customers in arrears to utilise the various payment platforms at their disposal, including the NWC IPAY, and the online banking portals.
