Fast-tracking legislation and policy implementation are some of the key areas of focus for newly appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Hon. Zavia Mayne, who is also an attorney-at-law.
In an interview with JIS News, Mr. Mayne said his primary responsibilities have been outlined by National Security Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang.
“They are the Department of Correctional Services, the Private Security Regulations Authority, the Institute of Forensic Science and Legal Medicine, Human Trafficking and my direct involvement in legislation. I will be assisting the process of having legislation fast tracked through the Ministry. Under these different headings, there are specific items that I definitely want to accomplish,” the State Minister noted.
He commended his predecessor, Senator Matthew Samuda, who is now Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.
“When you look at the Department of Correctional Services, I really want to acknowledge the work that has been done by my immediate predecessor, because a lot of work has been done. When you look at our prison system where we are now, the state and conditions of the facility, these are some of the things that work has started on and I intend to continue,” Mr. Mayne told JIS News.
The State Minister said he intends to build on what has been done. “National Security is perhaps one of the most talked-about portfolios at this time, so a lot of what we do here has to be viewed not just with great seriousness, but with great urgency. So, my first impression, work has been done, but there’s still a lot more work to be done,” he added.
Prior to his new appointment, Mr. Mayne served as State Minister in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security for three years.
He said his time at the Labour Ministry helped to prepare him for his new post. “It gave me that understanding of how government runs, the government system and the different tiers of management and structure within government,” the State Minister noted.
“Issues on the matter of labour will come across my desk here. My exposure and experience there will enhance my ability and certainly temper my judgment in dealing with those matters,” he added.
