Founder of digital marketing company, Branditise.com, Wayne Marsh, is encouraging Jamaicans to be innovative in creating businesses in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry.

“With the knowledge revolution, there is no reason a Jamaican couldn’t have come up with the selfie-stick or Uber app, for example. There is nothing stopping us really, other than the fact that we need to know we can do it,” he says.

In March 2014, Mr. Marsh launched Branditise.com, and in November of the same year, he was awarded the National Medal for Science, Technology and Innovation in the ICT category by the Scientific Research Council (SRC).

Branditise.com is a new digital tool, aimed at transforming the way businesses advertise and market their brands.

In an interview with JIS News, Mr. Marsh argues that from an economic standpoint, it is important that Jamaican companies are created, where services can be accessed on the Internet from anywhere in the world.

He recognizes moves by the Government to facilitate this, through the development of venture capital entities.

“Jamaica needs to highlight and promote more success stories of local companies developing solutions that can be accessed globally, which obviously will help the economy and will have the trickle-down effect. By doing this, people can realize that we are doing it; it can work and they can do it too,” he says.

Mr. Marsh tells JIS News that the feedback since start-up has been great, and he is in the process of offering his product globally.

“What I have found is that everyone who sees the product is impressed and wants to use it,” he says.

Mr. Marsh says he is very proud of the award he received in 2014, and at the time he felt it was confirmation that he was on to something good.

He is encouraging investors to support the ideas of those in the industry. “Don’t be afraid to fail. A lot of investors want to invest in a sure win, but sometimes it’s a matter of most will fail and that is fine, because the ones that succeed will more than compensate for the cost of the failure,” he adds.

For potential business owners in the ICT industry, Mr. Marsh says the first thing is to do some form of research, and get feedback. “If you come up with an idea and you think it is unique, but you do your research and you find that it’s not, that doesn’t mean you should stop. There are many different ways to solve a problem,” he notes.

Branditise.com has worked with several Government agencies, as well as corporate brands.

Mr. Marsh, who is a former Vice President with National Commercial Bank (NCB) Capital Market and was also a franchisor with WSI Internet Consulting, is passionate about technology, entrepreneurship and brand Jamaica.

“I really think that attaching brand Jamaica to solutions really helps, because the brand is a love brand globally,” he says.

“People are amazed that such a small country can produce so many great athletes. Similarly, you could have developers; people with their own applications or products; whatever it is, if it’s from Jamaica, I think that adds a different flavour and gives them a chance to really shine,” Mr. Marsh tells JIS News.
