The Full Story

The National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC) will be observing National Centenarians’ Day on May 20, 2024.

Originating in 1999 as part of the United Nations International Year of the Older Person, the annual observance pays tribute to Jamaicans who have reached the remarkable milestone of 100 years or more. Executive Director of the NCSC, Cassandra Morrison said the significance of this day is deeply rooted in Jamaica’s rich history of longevity, with centenarians and super-centenarians serving as living testaments to resilience and wisdom. Mrs. Morrison stated that centenarians are cherished as national symbols, embodying the collective memory of the country’s past, and serving as pillars of modern families.

She informed that the National Council for Senior Citizens, in collaboration with various stakeholders, maintain a register of centenarians, both within Jamaica and abroad.

As of April 23, 2024, the registry boasts 376 remarkable individuals, each with a unique story to tell. “On National Centenarians’ Day, these cherish citizens are honoured with gestures of respect and admiration. They may receive official birthday cards from King Charles III, congratulatory messages from Governor General, His Excellency, the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen,” Mrs. Morrison said.

They may also receive visits and tokens from the Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding, and other officials of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

“The NCSC is committed to preserving the legacies of centenarians by documenting their stories, ensuring that their wisdom and experiences are cherished for generations to come,” Mrs. Morrison said.

Jamaicans are being encouraged to join in honouring these living treasures, whose lives exemplify the enduring spirit of resilience, wisdom, and grace.  To register a centenarian, please contact the NCSC at:(876) 906-9277-8, (876) 676- 5721-2, Email: ncsc@mlss.gov.jm,  prunit@mlss.gov.jm
