Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, is encouraging Jamaicans to reflect on the nation’s history of courage and determination as the country observes Heritage Week from October 11 to 19.
Addressing Wednesday’s (October 14) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, the Minister said this year’s theme, ‘Resilient People with a Proud Heritage’, highlights the strength of the Jamaican people in overcoming adversity.
“From the resistance of our National Heroes and the sacrifices of our ancestors to the accomplishments of generations of Jamaicans who have contributed to nation-building, our heritage tells the story of a people who have consistently overcome adversity and emerged stronger,” Dr. Morris Dixon said.
The Minister underscored the relevance of this year’s theme, noting that Jamaicans have consistently demonstrated resilience in the face of natural disasters and other challenges.
“Last year, we had Hurricane Melissa, and now we’re having the worst drought in a generation. But even in the face of disaster, Jamaica will always stand tall. In Melissa’s aftermath, across communities, we witnessed extraordinary acts of compassion, courage, unity, and determination. That is what our heritage is. They reinforce our belief that our greatest national resource has always been our people,” she explained.
Senator Morris Dixon further emphasised that the country’s rich heritage provides a strong foundation on which to build the new Jamaica.
“We know we’re a resilient people, strengthened by our history and united by our heritage. Together we can and we will, under God, increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity, and play our part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race,” she declared.
