The Full Story

The Moore Town Maroons in Portland will be holding the annual Nanny Day celebrations in that community on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 19.
The day, which will feature a number of activities highlighting Maroon culture, traditional foods and entertainment, is regarded as a very special occasion, because of the special focus on the life of National Heroine, Nanny.
Among the special features of the day’s events will be the blowing of the abeng and Maroon dancing and drumming.
The activities will commence at 10:00 a.m. and will include an official function in which civic and political leaders in Portland will participate.
Colonel of the Moore Town Maroons, Wallace Sterling, told JIS News that the day’s activities are being meticulously planned to ensure that they reflect the high respect and esteem in which Nanny is held by the Moore Town community and the nation as a whole.
He pointed out that special plans have been put in place to include entertainment for the children, who will be attending the function this year.
Colonel Sterling said that representatives from the other Maroon communities of Accompong, Scotts Hall and Charles Town will also be in attendance.
