The Full Story

Residents of St. Mary were treated to a day of fun and excitement, at the annual Fishermen’s Regatta, held at Pagee Beach in Port Maria, on August 13.
The event, which was sponsored by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), was staged as part of the activities marking Independence celebrations in the parish.
Held on the first Wednesday following Independence Day, every year, the regatta has been a major feature of St. Mary’s Independence celebrations for the past 40 years.
The event, which commenced at 10:00 am, was attended by a large gathering, and featured several activities, including boat and swimming races, fishing craft, beer drinking and soup drinking competitions. The fishing craft competition involved catching the largest fish and catching the most fish.
Other entertainment included a cultural extravaganza in the afternoon, featuring various cultural groups, such as the Islington Dinki Mini Group, the Retreat Primary and Junior High School Dance Group and the Water Valley Primary School Dance Group. This was followed by a stage show, featuring popular reggae artiste, Capleton; Rising Star winner, Christopher Martin, X-Ale, Munga and Prophecy, among others.
Regional Manager for the Northern Region of the JCDC, Marlene Pusey-Reid, said she was pleased with the regatta’s success, as the large gathering was a strong indication that the activities were highly appreciated by the people of the parish.
She added that it was their support, which has enabled the event to be so successful over the years.
Also speaking to JIS News, were several patrons, who commended the JCDC, for organising the activities, and expressed their satisfaction for the fun and entertainment provided.
