On Sunday, May 23, a State of Emergency, limited to Kingston and St. Andrew, was declared by the Government of Jamaica.
The State of Emergency does not prevent people from going about their lawful businesses unless the security forces impose a curfew in an area, which would curtail movement including public gatherings.
During this State of Emergency, certain rights and civil liberties of citizens are restricted. Licensed firearm holders must travel with their firearms booklet at all times.
In addition to the State of Emergency a 48-hour curfew was enforced on May 26 at 6:00 p.m. and will end at 6:00 p.m. Friday, May 28. The boundaries of the curfew are:
WEST along Marcus Garvey Drive, East Avenue and Maxfield Avenue
NORTH along Nathan Street, 7th Street, Asquit Street and Studley Park Road
EAST along Slipe Pen Road, Princess Street and Port Royal Street
SOUTH along Port Royal Street on to Marcus Garvey Drive
During the hours of the curfew, only persons working in the essential services with proper identification will be allowed to enter and exit. All other movements are at the discretion of the ground commander.
