More than 10,000 children under 12 years of age, are expected to benefit from the Registrar General's Department (RGD) birth certification fair now underway.

The initiative is targeted at children in Kingston, St. Catherine, Westmoreland and Hanover, born between January 2000 and December 2011, and who have never received a birth certificate.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the RGD and Director of Operations, Yvette Scott, told JIS News that the three-month programme, which got underway on October 23 and runs until December 13, forms part of the department’s efforts to ensure all children across the island are registered.

Already, a number of children have been processed at fairs held at venues in the targeted parishes. Seven more events are slated to be held up to December 13 and the RGD is appealing to parents to take their children out to be certified.

“We are beginning with four parishes, so the children have to be born in those parishes. The parents need to take along with them, their identification card, the christening or baptismal record if the child is not registered, full address and contact number, and the immunization card,” Mrs. Scott informed.

“We don’t need any pet name, any otherwise known as…the more correct information they give us will assist us in processing the documents as quickly as possible and send (them) out to the respective parents,” she stated.

She said it is important that full contact information is provided so that the agency can readily get in touch if there is a query. “So, it is very important that if it is that they borrowed somebody’s phone, let the person know so when we call, we can get the information,” Mrs. Scott said.

The next fair will be held on November 20 at the Burnt Savanna Nazarene Church in Westmoreland.

The RGD journeys to Hanover on November 21 at the Chester Castle United Bible Church, and returns to Westmoreland on November 22 at the Bluefield’s Peoples Community Association.

The fairs continue on December 4 at the Lucea Christian Fellowship Church, Hanover; Independence Park in Westmoreland on December 5; Old Harbour Holy Trinity Church, St. Catherine on December 11; and culminates on December 13 at the East Queen Street Baptist Church in Kingston.
