More Judges Appointed to Serve In the Supreme Court

KINGSTON — Five judges were sworn in today September 15, to serve in the Supreme Court, by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, during a ceremony at King’s House.

They are: His Honour Frank Williams, Her Honour Carol Edwards, and Mr. Kirk Anderson, who have been appointed  Puisne Judges of the Supreme Court; Her Honour Sharon Ayton George, who will act as Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court; and Her Honour Sonia Bertram Linton,  to act as Master-in-Chambers of the Supreme Court.

In his  remarks,  the Governor-General said the judges have a high responsibility to protect the legitimacy and integrity of the judicial system, by ensuring that justice is dispensed, despite the challenges and criticisms which they may face.

“Every profession has its share of challenges, setbacks and disappointments and the judiciary is not immune to these conditions. Despite all these things, however, you have kept the system above reproach, for which the entire nation is grateful, and we ask that you continue to make us proud,” he said.

The Governor General emphasised that they were selected because of their “integrity and hard work,” as well as their qualifications and experience.

He commended them for the “diligent manner in which you have executed your duties so far…and I hope that your new experience which will require a greater level of patient, meticulous, courageous work, will also be a rewarding one for you and the nation as well.”

In her charge to the appointees, Chief Justice, Hon. Mrs. Justice Zaila McCalla, said that despite the demands, they would have to be proactive to ensure that the time of the court is not wasted.

She congratulated the judges on the hard work they have done over the years, adding that it was on that basis that they have been called upon to continue serving.

“Your appointment is indicative of the tremendous confidence entrusted to you to carry out your duties with the utmost competence, fairness and integrity. You are responsible, not only to yourself but to your profession and the people of Jamaica to uphold the finest tradition of the judiciary,” she said.

President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Mr. Justice Seymour Panton, encouraged the judges to perform their duties efficiently,  and urged them to continue to uphold the high standards that have been set by their colleagues.

Responding on behalf of the appointees,  Justice Williams said they are “proud” and “humbled,” and will continue efforts toward enhancing the quality of justice in the country.

“We are confident that with your continued support and with God’s help, we will be more than able to maintain the high standards of the Jamaican judiciary and ensure that through our work, we will inspire public trust and confidence in the justice system,” he said.
