The Honourable Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport yesterday pledged a scholarship worth 50-thousand dollars for a student at Gaynstead High School as well promised to have lights and a stand installed at the newly built netball court at the school.
Speaking at a ceremony at Gaynstead High held to mark the start of the new school year, Miss Grange, a past head girl of the school, said, “The scholarship will be for a student excelling in sport and of course doing well academically also.”
With regards to the netball court, the Sport Minister said, “When I spoke at the Graduation ceremony at Gaynstead in 2016, I promised the school a netball court and here it is. Now I am committing to see that lights are installed at the court and a stand be built as well. These things will be done.”
“Also I am going to get an architect and an engineer to carry out an examination of the school plant as start of the process to restore the school building which is in need of repairs and expansion.”
Miss Grange, who cut the ribbon symbolically opening the netball court for play, said how pleased she was with the progress that Gaynstead continues to make in the sport of netball, “which as you know is the leading team sport, not just in Jamaica but in the entire English-speaking Caribbean.”
She congratulated two of the students, Latanya Wilson and Kelsey Jonas, who have represented Jamaica teams, the Under-16 and the Sunshine Girls.
“Even more pleasing is that Gaynstead is also doing very well academically. Let us congratulate and applaud the Board of Directors, Principal, Dr. Boyd-Vassell, her hardworking staff and of course the students whose work has consistently made the school proud.”
“I am calling on all my colleague past students to come forward for our alma mater. Let us give back more than we have ever done before for the continued development of our school, which has emphatically demonstrated that it is fully deserving of our support,” Miss Grange concluded.
