Students at Easington Primary School in St. Thomas have benefited from educational grants and mentorship to guide them in their academic journey.
The support came from the Morant Bay High School Alumni Association (MBHSAA), which includes past students of Easington Primary, during a ‘Community Give Back Day’ at the institution on Monday (October 12).
The event was part of MBHSAA’s Alumni Week, which began on Sunday (October 11).
Executive Member of the MBHSAA and President of the Easington Primary School Alumni Association, Dr. Peter Smith, explained that
“[Alumni Week] is a full week of activities. It started out this year with a church service and then for the past few years, we’ve designated the Monday right after for all of us… to go back to our respective primary schools to do what we call ‘give back’.”
He pointed out that this is the third consecutive year that the event was being held at Easington Primary. The day’s activities began with worship followed by the handover of financial grants and mentorship sessions with the students.
Presentations were made to the Top Boy and Top Girl, Most Improved Students and for Best Attendance.
The day also included bounce house and concessionary treats for the children as well as the distribution of care packages to shut-ins in the community.
The MBHSAA previously completed repairs on the school building, donated books, and assisted with the refurbishing of the staff room, and is targeting the rehabilitation of the library as well as assisting with other basic needs.
Executive member of the Easington Primary School Alumni Association, Veronica Walker-Moodie and her husband, Newton Moodie, who are both members of the MBHSAA, sponsored some of the awards that were presented during the Give Back Day.
“I think one of the important things for us when it comes to Easington Primary School is to create a legacy that we can look back at and be proud of. It also enables the school, the teachers, principal and community at large to know that there is a force out there that’s working with the school to make some infrastructure improvements,” Mrs. Moodie said.
“We think it is important for us to help these little ones that are coming up,” she added.

Easington Primary School Principal, Marigold Webber-Smith, said the Give Back Day was heart-warming, noting that the student population of roughly 70 pupils is grateful.
“I have seen where we have been bearing fruit. We have been getting more students and when they (MBHSAA) give back, other persons look on the programmes that they have implemented at the school and it will draw more persons to us,” she pointed out.
MBHSAA’s Alumni Week continues with an Invasion at the Morant Bay High School on October 14, a Cool Down and Picnic at Boston Bay Beach on October 15, a President’s Lyme on October 15, a trip to Bath Fountain on October 16 and grand Brunch on the Beach on October 17 at Cerulean Bay in East Prospect.
