The Full Story

Two students from Montego Bay, St. James, Yashika Walker of Montego Bay High and Orville Lawes of Cornwall College, were awarded the 2008 to 2013 Bayley- Hay Scholarship, valued at $100,000 each.
The scholarships were awarded to the new high school students by the Montego Co-operative Credit Union (MCCU), at its 16th Scholarship Awards Ceremony, which was held at the Day-O-Plantation Restaurant in Granville, St. James yesterday (August 26).
Addressing participants at the ceremony, including students and their parents, Pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Montego Bay, Rev. Everton Jackson, said receiving that level of financial assistance, must be seen as a “glorious and coveted” opportunity and embraced with seriousness and pride.
“Yashika and Orville, as you prepare to enter high school in September, I challenge you to establish your goal in life, know where you are going, because if you do not know where you are going, you will end up just about anywhere,” Rev. Jackson advised.
He called on the recipients to be inspired by the exceptional performances of the Jamaican athletes at the recently ended 29th Olympiad in Beijing, China, who committed themselves to hard work and discipline.
“Make every effort to guard against peer group pressure, guard against the category of students who like to waste time and break the rules, guard against the gangs in the institution, guard against those who would resort to drugs, or else, in the long run you will make a mockery of this very presentation ceremony. Go and achieve your goals”, Rev. Jackson urged the awardees.
A number of outstanding performers from among past recipients, were presented with cheques valuing $10,000 each, by the Montego Co-operative Credit Union. The Bayley-Hay Scholarship, is in recognition of the late Josiah Bayley-Hay, who gave invaluable service to the credit union. To date some $2.35 million have been expended to over 30 beneficiaries.
