Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson has expressed concern about the promotion and advertising of alcohol, targeting young persons.

“It is that same group of adolescent youth that we are wooing either to become…the next round of drinkers…think about the accidents, think about all the other problems (it causes),” he argued.

The Minister was addressing the 10th Anniversary Dinner and Awards ceremony, for Island Radiology, held at the Club Hotel Riu, Ocho Rios, in St. Ann, on Saturday, June 20.

Dr. Ferguson emphasised the need for moderation in the consumption of alcohol, and being responsible for one’s actions.

The Health Minister cited the excessive or harmful use of alcohol and tobacco, as well as unhealthy diets and physical inactivity, all as areas of concern and focus, for the Ministry.

Meanwhile, he re-emphasised the Government’s commitment to continuing the fight to curtail non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which he says is the cause of 70 per cent of deaths annually in Jamaica.

He stated that the government’s move towards improving primary health care is a part of this strategy.

Island Radiology is a company, which provides diagnostic services in Ocho Rios, St. Ann; Mandeville, Manchester; and Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth.
