The Ministry of Transport and Mining (MTM) will host a Jamaica 60 Exposition on Friday, July 29 at the Police Officers Club, on Hope Road in Kingston.
The event is part of the Jamaica 60 celebrations and will be held under the theme ‘The Embers of Evolution…Fuel for the Future’.
In an interview with JIS News, MTM Director of Public Relations and Communications, Nyoka Linton, explained that the Ministry is using the opportunity to highlight the contribution of its sectors to the country over the past 60 years.
“It is restricted to 60 years because although it goes back so much further than that, we wanted to keep our focus on Jamaica 60, so we are taking it from Independence to now,” Miss Linton explained.
“The Expo is really seeking to shed light on what we do as a Ministry and what our stakeholders do. We all come together to make it all work, so it will highlight how our Mining sector and transport sector contribute to national development,” she added.
The participants include Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ), Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), Ports Security Corps, Aeronautical Telecommunications (Aerotel), Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA), Jamaica Bauxite Mining (JBM), Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI), Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), Jamaica Ultimate Tyre Company (JUTC 2), Montego Bay Metro (MBM), Jamaica Railway Corporation JRC), Transport Authority (TA), Toll Authority of Jamaica (TAJ), Earthquake Unit, Mines and Geology Division (MGD, Island Traffic Authority (ITA) and the Road Safety Unit (RSU).
Miss Linton noted that there will also be displays from some of the Ministry’s stakeholders, such as PAK Kingston, which is the management company for the Norman Manley International Airport, Windalco and Discovery Bauxite Operations Ltd. (formerly Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners).
“We also have some artists from our minerals sector who are so excited to participate and showcase their art. They will also have those things on sale,” she added.
Miss Linton informed that the event, which is open to the public, will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and that there will be a “kiddies section” to keep children occupied and entertained while their parents enjoy the expo.
“We are inviting one and all to come and participate, enjoy the day. We are targeting everybody, the young, the elders and those in-between. We just want to expand the view of the Ministry, give a little more perspective on what the Ministry and its agencies do, and how they contribute to our country’s development, she said.
The event will be declared open by Minister of Transport and Mining, Hon. Audley Shaw, at 11:30 a.m.
