The Full Story

As the Christmas season unfolds with celebrations and activities, the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MoESYI) is urging parents, guardians, and community members to remain vigilant in safeguarding the well-being of children across Jamaica.

The festive period, while joyful, often presents increased risks to children’s safety, particularly in crowded public spaces, during travel, and at social gatherings. Senior Director, Children’s Affairs Policy Division, Hyacinth Blair, said child protection must remain a top priority, even amidst the excitement of the holidays.

In an interview with JIS News, she noted that children are more vulnerable during this time due to heightened mobility, exposure to unfamiliar individuals, and the relaxation of regular routines.

“We want families to enjoy the season, but we also want to ensure that children are not left unattended, are properly supervised, and are kept away from potentially harmful situations,” Mrs. Blair said.

She is reminding the public that child abuse is a serious offence and that any suspicion of abuse must be reported immediately.

Citizens are encouraged to contact the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) through its 24-hour hotline at 211, via WhatsApp at 876-878-2882, or by visiting any of the agency’s locations islandwide.

Reports can also be made by emailing report@childprotection.gov.jm.

In addition, the Ministry is appealing to event organisers and community leaders to create child-friendly spaces at public functions and to ensure that safety protocols are in place.

Parents are advised to speak with their children about personal safety, including the importance of staying close to trusted adults and avoiding interactions with strangers.

The Ministry continues to work with the CPFSA, law enforcement, and civil society partners to promote a safe and nurturing environment for Jamaica’s children.

As the nation celebrates the spirit of giving and togetherness, Jamaicans are being urged to make child protection a shared responsibility.

For more information on child safety and protection services, persons may visit the CPFSA’s website at www.childprotection.gov.jm or follow the agency’s social media platforms.
