The Full Story

Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon, is urging Jamaicans to exercise discernment when consuming information at this time.

“You have to be very discerning. You have to know what is good information from bad information. If you want to know where the storm is going, if you want to know what to do, you need to look for official sources. You need to be looking at JIS (Jamaica Information Service), ODPEM’s (Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management’s) information sites and the Office of the Prime Minister page. Those are legitimate places,” she said.

Her call comes in light of misinformation being spread on social media regarding the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

In an interview with JIS News, Dr. Morris Dixon said this is typical during times of disaster.

Dr. Morris Dixon also urged caution with messages received on WhatsApp at this time.

“There is so much misinformation online. I know also in the WhatsApp groups, you have to be very careful there too. If anything seems really weird, remember, go to official sources and check. If it’s not on JIS, if it’s not on ODPEM, it’s probably not true,” she said.
