Minister of Education, Hon. Andrew Holness, says the Government will ensure the Student Loan Bureau (SLB) has sufficient funds to provide loans next year.
He says the Government is not aware of any extraordinary cash problems at the Bureau that would prevent students from getting loans. The Education Minister was responding to concerns raised by his Opposition counterpart, Senator Basil Waite, that the SLB will run out of money in 2010. The Opposition Spokesman on Education was speaking at the UWI Western campus in Montego Bay, St. James, on the weekend. Minister Holness says the Finance Minister, Hon. Audley Shaw, has informed him there’s no cash shortage at the SLB. The Education Minister says the Bureau has not escaped the difficulties caused by the global economic crisis, but the Government will ensure that the tertiary education-funding institution has enough cash to lend. He says provisions are being made for increased allocations to the SLB in the next budget to ensure that those who qualify receive loans.
