The Full Story

Minister without Portfolio with responsibility for Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Karl Samuda, says $5 billion has been added to the Ministry’s budget for the 2020/2021 financial year.

“I am so very happy that my Cabinet members embraced the appeal I made, and with the kind of support that we have received from Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Hon. Nigel Clarke, “Mr. Samuda said, as he addressed a Consultation for Region 4, which was held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James on February 19.

The Minister noted that the increase will augur well for the Ministry, as it will be able to accomplish a lot more in the sector.

“We will have the opportunity to do things that we couldn’t do [this financial] year,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister said he intends to significantly raise the standards of schools across the island, particularly as it relates to school furniture, as institutions must be properly equipped.

“No school, no classroom must have a desk designed for two having three students [seated] at that desk. No school should be devoid of proper sanitation. We want to raise the standards of our schools, no matter how small or large [they are],” the Minister emphasised.

Mr. Samuda assured educators in attendance that they have his full support, and encouraged them to partner with the Ministry.

“One thing that you can rely on is the absolute uncompromising support you will get from your Minister. I will support you in all your reasonable needs. My only hope for success lies in your support, as without your support, there is no [success],” he said.

“Let us hold hands; let us work together; and anytime you have a problem, feel free to call any of the leaders of the Ministry or call me directly,” he added.

The event brought together stakeholders from Region 4 to hold dialogue with Mr. Samuda; Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Grace McLean; Regional Director in Region 4 of the Ministry, Dr. Michele Pinnock; as well as other officers from the Ministry.
