Minister of Health Commends Medical and Health Volunteers for Successful Work Being Done in Haiti

Minister of Health, Hon. Rudyard Spencer says the team of medical and health volunteers has been able to immediately and successfully assist in the effort to provide much needed medical and health support to the people of Haiti.
Since its arrival early Saturday morning (January 16, 2010), the team has conducted surgeries and other procedures as well as had numerous patient consultations. It has also been able to assist with the re-establishment of an Operating Theatre at a Polyclinic in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The team is working alongside doctors from the United States and is expected to stay in Haiti for seven days. At that time, the Ministry will deploy another team of volunteers as the need arises.
“I want to thank our volunteers who have been doing excellent work in Haiti to help the persons who have been affected by the earthquake. We will continue our efforts to assist in any way we can as we are in it for the long haul,” Minister Spencer said.
The team includes orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, anesthetists, emergency medical technicians, emergency and intensive care unit nurses, nurse anesthetists, public health doctors, nurses and inspectors, an orthopedic technician and a health education officer.
The Ministry of Health is the central co-ordinating agency for medical and health volunteers to Haiti. Persons in the medical and health care fields who wish to volunteer may contact the Ministry of Health at 1-888-ONE LOVE (1-888-663-5683), Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
