The Full Story

Minister with responsibility for Works, Hon. Robert Nesta Morgan, is appealing to all Jamaicans to exercise caution during and after the passage of Hurricane Melissa, particularly in areas affected by heavy rainfall and flooding.

Minister Morgan is urging members of the public not to attempt to cross flooded roads, gullies, or bridges under any circumstances. He warned that strong or fast-moving water can be extremely dangerous. These bodies of water are sometimes deeper than appear and often have strong current that can wash away even moving vehicles.

“We understand that people may be anxious to check on relatives, homes, or farms after the storm, but safety must come first. Please do not risk your life or the lives of others by trying to cross flooded areas. Even a small amount of moving water can be deadly,” Minister Morgan said.

He further advised that after the storm passes, citizens should avoid using or approaching any road, bridge, or structure that appears damaged, cracked, or unstable, and report such cases immediately to the National Works Agency (NWA) by calling its Emergency Operations Centre. The NWA’s centre can be contacted at 658 – 213 – 2557 – 60. Persons may also dial 876 – 312 – 3991 or 876 – 312 – 3987. The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) can also be contacted as well as local parish disaster coordinators.

Minister Morgan emphasized that the Government, through the NWA and other partners , will be conducting assessments and emergency response operations across the island to restore safe access and repair affected infrastructure.

“We are working to ensure the safety of all Jamaicans. Your cooperation will help us respond faster and prevent further tragedy,” he added.

The Minister also thanked the NWA teams, contractors, first responders, and community volunteers who continue to serve on the frontlines during this period of national emergency.
