School administrators are being encouraged to support and participate in the Fire Wardens Club in Schools Project, being implemented by the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB).

Speaking during the 2024/2025 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday (May 28), Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, said that the project is a new and special component of the JFB’s Fire and Life Safety Education Programme.

“It aims to provide our children in the primary-school-education system with the skills they need to avoid and prevent fires and bring them into a culture of disaster prevention,” he said.

He noted that the Fire Wardens is a uniformed club that is endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education and Youth, and forms part of the extracurricular programmes in primary schools.

“This is a social transformation initiative, and I am highly optimistic that it can help to save our children’s lives and create an intergenerational culture of fire safety that will preserve lives in homes and communities across the country. I urge the schools to buy into this project because it can save lives and help to educate our children,” the Minister added.

Minister McKenzie further indicated that among all the important projects being undertaken by the JFB, the Fire Wardens Club in Schools Project holds the greatest potential to transform national attitudes towards fire safety.
