Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, says local Irish potato farmers are primed to produce sufficient yields to boost national outputs significantly for 2025 and beyond.
“Despite the challenges they face, our farmers have buckled down in a meaningful way, putting in the work and should soon be seeing the rewards. I am really impressed, especially with the potential for huge results,” Mr. Green said following a tour of several farming communities in St. Ann on February 25.
During the tour, the Ministry in collaboration with key agencies got first-hand insight into the production and reaping of Irish Potatoes from beneficiary farmers under the National Irish Potato Production Programme.
Minister Green noted that last year’s metrics indicated record production levels, with many farmers exceeding national and even global averages for Irish potatoes per hectare.
This achievement, he said, demonstrates the hard work and dedication of local farmers, who have adopted modern agricultural techniques.
“Our farmers clearly have been doing all the right things… following and adhering to best practices and all,” Mr. Green stated, while acknowledging the role of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) in providing vital support and resources.
“RADA has played a crucial role in the country’s agricultural strategy, implementing training programmes and providing technical assistance to enhance farmers’ skills and knowledge,” he further noted.
As part of the tour, Minister Green interacted with local farmers, gathering insights on their experiences and the challenges they face.
Many farmers expressed optimism about the upcoming season, citing improvements in soil quality and access to better seeds.
Hinds Town, St. Ann farmer, Rohan Cooper, said he was happy with the Minister’s visit, describing it as timely.
“We are seeing improvements, and with the right support, we can produce even more. The Minister’s visit gives us hope and motivation,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Mr. Green said the farmers’ enthusiasm and willingness “to do whatever it takes” will only strengthen the commitment to support the programme even more.
“Together, we can ensure that our farmers are equipped to meet both local and international demands,” he stated.
