Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining, Hon. Floyd Green, has reaffirmed his commitment to advancing sectoral projects, following his reappointment to the portfolio.

Speaking with JIS News following the swearing-in ceremony for 18 Ministers of Government at King’s House on Wednesday (September 17), Mr. Green described his reappointment as an opportunity to advance several key initiatives to completion.

He also expressed deep gratitude for the chance to continue serving, stating that he is “elated, very excited, [and] very humbled”.

Mr. Green noted that while a solid foundation has been laid, the Ministry will now intensify efforts to expedite projects currently in progress.

“We will look at the things that have gone well. We’ll also look, frankly, at the things that have not gone well, and then we will build on the things that have gone well. We have some things that we have been working on, and we have to accelerate the pace of implementation of those,” the Minister stated.

Mr. Green said these engagements include “[increased] storage… [and] more irrigation for our farmers, a diversified fisheries sector and, of course, bringing back Jiuquan Iron and Steel Company (JISCO) Alpart… [and] getting our mining sector to where it used to be”.

Meanwhile, the Minister indicated that new initiatives will prioritise protected agriculture, enhanced housing support for farming communities, and the promotion of sustainable mining practices. He assured, “You will see us move solidly to implement those commitments”.

Mr. Green expressed gratitude to Jamaicans, particularly farmers, fishers, and miners, noting that their industries remain central to the nation’s economic growth and sustainable development.

“I want to say to our farmers and fishers… [that] you are at the centre of what this Government does, and you will see more of that. I want to say to our mining sector that a lot is depending on doing it (mining) in a manner that ensures we can do it for a long time, ensures that our community needs are taken into account, ensures that the social responsibility is put on the front burner and… that we get back to the days of growth,” he said.
