Minister Grange to Launch Inter-American Year of Women on International Women’s Day

Kingston, March 4, 2010 – The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Olivia Grange, MP will officially launch 2010 as the Inter-American Year of Women in Jamaica.
The launching ceremony will take place on International Women’s Day, Monday, March 8 at the Jamaica Conference Centre beginning at 10:00am.
2010 was declared as the Inter-American Year of Women by the Organisation of American States/Inter-America Commission on Women.
The ceremony to officially launch the Inter-American Year of Women in Jamaica will feature a panel discussion examining the impact of HIV/AIDS on women’s health.
The event being organised by the Bureau of Women’s Affairs, an agency of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, will also have an awards component in observation of International Women’s Day when women across the world are recognised for their contribution to the various spheres of life. Several women from various sectors will be honoured by the Bureau.
The theme for International Women’s Day this year is ‘equal rights, equal opportunities: progress for all’.
Her Excellency the Most Honourable Lady Allen, the wife of the Governor-General, is the patron of International Women’s Day.
