January 3, 2009

The Full Story

Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Olivia Grange is among a group of outstanding Caribbean women and women’s organisations, recently honoured by the New York-based Everybody’s Magazine, at its Women of Distinction Gala Awards held in Brooklyn in the United States of America (USA).
The women were honoured by the Caribbean-American magazine for excellence in their chosen fields.
At the event, which was also a celebration of the publication’s 30th anniversary, homage was paid to: Deputy Borough President/Borough of Brooklyn, Yvonne Graham; Special Markets Manager of Moet Hennessy, Sybil Chester; Chair/Chief Executive Officer of Carver Federal Savings Bank, Deborah C. Wright; Producer of Hal Jackson Sunday Classics-WBLS Radio, Debi Jackson; the Guyanese Nurses Association (GNA); and the musical group, Women in Steel Orchestra.
Magazine founder/publisher Herman Hall, in a citation, recognised Ms. Grange’s special relationship with the magazine, dating back 30 years, when she was a contributing writer. The Minister, who was unable to attend the function, will be presented with her award at a special ceremony to be held in Kingston, Jamaica.
In the meantime, a cheque in the amount of US$2,500 was presented to Executive Director of the New York-based American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI), Ann-Marie Grant, for a scholarship for a Grenadian student to study at the university.
Mr. Hall, who is a Grenadian native, used the occasion to pay tribute to the sponsors, advertisers, supporters and readers of the magazine, for their patronage over the years. Past and current staff of the magazine were also recognised at the event.
