Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Delroy Chuck, has encouraged adolescent mothers to see their journey, not as a catastrophe but as the beginning of greatness.
Speaking at the Legal Forum for Adolescent Mothers on Wednesday, February 25 at the AC Hotel by Marriott Kingston, Minister Chuck noted that while teenage pregnancy is often a circumstance society tends to avoid discussing, it should be met with support rather than stigma.

He reminded the young women that life does not end with pregnancy, noting that there are opportunities to improve themselves while guiding their children to become responsible, upstanding citizens.
Mr. Chuck further emphasised empowerment through legal literacy and the pursuit of personal ambition.
“So, young mothers, not only do you have your life ahead of you but you have to see how best you will assist the young child that you brought into this world. The Government will give you as much assistance as possible,” he said, stressing that the responsibility ultimately rests with the young women to make the decision to aspire for better.
Mr. Chuck highlighted the many opportunities available through the HEART/NSTA Trust and urged the young women to take full advantage of them.
The Minister emphasised that the Legal Aid Council (LAC) remains a vital resource for young mothers seeking legal guidance, particularly those unsure of where to turn for support.
Mr. Chuck further underscored the significance of the partnership between the LAC and the Women’s Centre, pointing out that far too many young mothers encounter legal challenges without fully understanding the protections guaranteed to them by the State.
Executive Director of the LAC, Dian Watson, echoed these sentiments, describing the forum as “a space for renewal and empowerment”.
“It seeks to support adolescent mothers by providing the knowledge, resources, and confidence needed to move forward with strength and to build a stable and hopeful future for themselves and their children,” Mrs. Watson added.
The forum, held under the theme ‘Women Gracefully Charmed; Legally Informed’, was hosted by the LAC in partnership with the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation (WCJF), as part of the Social Justice Project (So-Just), funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
It was designed to address the unique legal challenges faced by young mothers, equipping them with essential knowledge about their rights, responsibilities, and the various avenues available for accessing justice.
In addition to legal guidance, the adolescent mothers received support in areas such as etiquette and social skills, access to educational and training opportunities, and strategies for maintaining mental well-being.
