The Full Story

Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck, has hailed Justices of the Peace (JPs) for their invaluable contribution to Jamaica’s justice system.

Speaking at a JP sensitisation session at the Iberostar Hotel in Lilliput, St. James, on Wednesday (June 18), the Minister said that “Justice of the Peace volunteers are the backbone of our community justice framework”.

“They put service above self, often working tirelessly without expectation of reward, and in doing so, they uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice reaches every corner of Jamaica,” he noted.

“Your voluntary efforts make a real difference in people’s lives. I urge you to continue this noble work, to be symbols of integrity, and to help us build a stronger, safer Jamaica for all,” Minister Chuck added.

He urged them to maintain accuracy and full disclosure when providing information to the public.

“When you, as a JP, give information, it must be accurate, comprehensive, and trustworthy. If you’re unsure about something, it’s better to say so rather than risk spreading misinformation,” he advised.

He noted that the justice helpline 888-587-8423 is a valuable resource providing prompt, curated assistance and information to citizens seeking justice-related support.

“An operator is always ready to guide you in the right [direction] or connect you with the appropriate agency. Our goal is to make justice services accessible to every Jamaican, regardless of where they are on the island,” he noted.

Minister Chuck called on JPs and citizens to be proactive in fostering peace and stability in the society.

“It is our collective responsibility to promote social harmony and support efforts like victim services and restorative justice, which help repair relationships and rebuild communities,” he said.
