Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar and Chairman of the Westmoreland Parish Council, Delford Morgan has lauded the Government for the recent procurement of new fire units, and for making three available to the parish.
Speaking at the Westmoreland Parish Council’s monthly meeting in Savanna-la-Mar on (October 12), Mayor Morgan said there was now a need to get more fire hydrants in workable condition, particularly in the town.
“I would want to urge the authorities to take into account the fact that fire trucks are useless without functional hydrants. The Government has taken a lot of flack for the absence of fire trucks in the recent past, but now that the units are here, the government must take some credit,” he said. Turning to activities planned by the Jamaica Fire Brigade in observance of Fire Safety Awareness Week (October 22 – 28) under the theme: ‘Preventing fires . Protecting the Environment”, Mayor Morgan urged persons to go out and support them, and be educated about safety measures to prevent fires. During the week, there will be several displays, demonstrations and simulation exercises carried out by the fire services as well as the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in selected areas, such as schools, community centres, and business establishments.
There will also be lectures, video presentations, blood pressure and sugar tests and giveaways for all participants at the two main locations at the Negril and Savanna-la-Mar fire stations.
