Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Danree Delancy, has acknowledged government support for residents of Westmoreland who were impacted by Hurricane Melissa on October 28.
He mentioned the help provided through care packages and appealed for continued assistance to meet the ongoing needs of residents.
Addressing the monthly meeting of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation on December 11, Councillor Delancy noted the extensive impact of the hurricane on the parish, which has left several small businesses shuttered.
He said that the closure of large businesses, including hotels, has contributed to an increase in unemployment.
He also commended the contributions of charitable organisations and individuals who have assisted residents.
“We are cognisant that government can’t do everything for them… . These people have stepped up in a way to address the shortfall wherever it exists,” the Mayor said.
He also commended Councillors who have gone above and beyond to assist constituents, including using personal vehicles to transport donations and providing shelter to those whose homes were lost.
The Mayor expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones during the passage of the hurricane.
He hailed healthcare practitioners and first responders for their swift and dedicated support during and after the hurricane.
Councillor Delancy said that despite ongoing challenges, such as power outages and lack of running water, residents must remain resilient.
“We survived the hurricane… once there is life, there is hope,” he continued, urging support for the less fortunate and cooperation in restoring normalcy across the parish.
