The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information Maths Month celebrations culminate on Friday (March 28), with the inaugural Region 7 Mathematics Day extravaganza at the Glenmuir High School in Clarendon.
More than 1,800 students and 300 teachers from public and private schools in the parish are expected to participate in the day’s activities, which are scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m.
Mathematics Coordinator for Region 7, Camae Johnson Burrell, told JIS News that the theme for the event, ‘Innovating for Tomorrow: Empowering Future Leaders Through STEAM’, reflects the Ministry’s commitment to infusing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics into everyday learning.
She said the primary objectives of the event are to create an environment for teachers and students that nurtures a positive attitude towards learning and problem-solving; ensure that students recognise the interconnectedness of STEAM disciplines, thereby enriching their educational experience; inspire students to appreciate the relevance of mathematics in everyday life and to cultivate a passion for the subject; demonstrate how mathematics is applied in various fields, emphasising its importance beyond the confines of the classroom; and provide opportunities for students to use mathematical knowledge in solving real-world problems and innovate for the future.
The Mathematics Day extravaganza will include an extensive programme filled with engaging and educational activities for students and teachers.
Among them is a STEAM Activity for Secondary Schools, where two of Region 7’s six designated National School Learning and Intervention Plan (NSLIP) institutions will compete to design and construct model greenhouses that incorporate sustainability principles along with mathematical applications.
There will be a STEAM Activity for Primary Schools, involving 14 primary NSLIP schools, which will take on the challenge of designing parachutes based on specific scenarios, applying principles of engineering and mathematics to test their designs.
Another activity is the Quality Education Circle (QEC) exhibits, with schools showcasing interactive displays centred around various fields such as agriculture, fashion, architecture, culinary arts, and the performing arts. These will illustrate the critical role of mathematics in these disciplines.
Teachers will also get the opportunity to put their mathematical knowledge to the test in an engaging Master Maths competition.
Participants will also enjoy maths races, where students and educators will compete to solve a challenging maths question, with prizes for top performers.
First runner-up in the 2025 National Mathematics Teacher of the Year competition, Sasha Ashley-Kelly from the Pleasant Valley Primary School in Clarendon will be recognised.
Throughout the day, attendees will get the opportunity to compete for prizes such as cash, trophies, medals, and gift baskets.
“Regional Mathematics Day is not just a celebration of mathematics but a commitment to fostering a love for learning and exploration in our students, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow,” Mrs. Johnson Burrell said.
