The Full Story

Jamaica continues to record reductions in major crimes, including murders, says Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr. the Hon. Dana Morris Dixon.

“Major crimes are down 14.1 per cent. Murders are down 19 per cent. Those are the facts, and so when murders and major crimes were going up, they made the news every single day, now that they are going down, nobody is talking about it enough… . This is October 26, 2024 data year on year,” she said.

Dr. Morris Dixon provided the update on the crime data during yesterday’s (October 30) post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.

“The data shows that because of the work of our policemen and the JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force), we see the number of gangs moving from 600 to 150, still too many, but that’s a big decrease and that says that our JCF is working, and a lot of the new initiatives that have been implemented are working,” the Minister said.

The Government has significantly invested in strengthening Jamaica’s security architecture to safeguard life, property and socio-economic stability.

In 2023, Jamaica saw a reduction in all major crimes, with murders down by 7.8 per cent at the end of the year.
