In light of the adverse weather conditions across the island as a result of Tropical Storm Rafael, the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) is urging all boaters and mariners to exercise extreme caution and take all the necessary measures to ensure their safety.
Director of Safety, Environment and Certification at the MAJ, Captain Steven Spence, told JIS News that safety at sea was paramount and urged strict adherence to guidelines and advisories from the Authority.
“The MAJ prioritises the safety of our maritime community and encourages everyone to take necessary precautions to mitigate potential risks,” he said.
Captain Spence emphasised that the operators of all seagoing vessels should take heed of the warnings and prioritise safety.
The MAJ is also appealing to all fisher folk, boat owners and operators to secure their vessels and remain onshore until the weather improves.
Mariners are being asked to closely monitor weather reports and warnings issued by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, and adhere to these and marine safety guidelines.
For his part, MAJ Director General, Bertrand Smith, urged the operators of ships, as well as fishers and seafarers in Jamaica’s coastal waters to exercise extreme caution and follow the instructions issued by the Authority, as well as the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), through the Harbour Master.
“The Authority requests that all necessary precautions be taken for Tropical Storm Rafael and wishes everyone to stay calm and safe,” he said.
Mr. Smith also urged crews and operators of vessels that are offshore or in Jamaica’s coastal waters to exercise caution and stay as far as possible from the path of the powerful storm.
Persons operating fishing vessels and small marine crafts are encouraged to find shelter in one of the island’s numerous coves or use a safe mooring.
