The Full Story

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ) is saluting the National Land Agency (NLA) and its team of hydrographers for their invaluable contribution to safe and sustainable shipping locally.

In his message to commemorate World Hydrography Day, being observed on Friday (June 21), MAJ Director General, Bertrand Smith, noted that data produced from surveys done by hydrographers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime transport.

“The National Land Agency’s Surveys and Mapping Division, through its dedicated hydrographic team, conducts vital surveys to ensure the accuracy and currency of nautical charts used in Jamaican waters,” he pointed out.

“Ships heavily rely on nautical charts for navigation. These charts, essential for safe passage, are meticulously prepared, based on data generated from hydrographic surveys,” Mr. Smith said.

“Additionally, the NLA represents Jamaica on the Council of the International Hydrographic Organization, demonstrating its commitment to global maritime safety standards” he further stated.

Mr. Smith said Jamaica is a State Party to the International Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention) and upholds its obligations under the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) primary instrument regulating shipping safety.

The Director General noted that Chapter Five (V) of the Convention mandates that ships of all sizes must carry nautical charts, underscoring Jamaica’s role as a port State responsible for the collection and compilation of hydrographic data to facilitate safe navigation.

He said the MAJ, which is entrusted with regulating and developing shipping while implementing SOLAS Convention guidelines, collaborates closely with the NLA and other members of the National Hydrographic Committee.

“Together, these agencies work tirelessly to enhance the safety and sustainability of marine activities within Jamaican waters,” Mr. Smith pointed out.

World Hydrography Day is being observed under the theme: ‘Hydrographic Information – Enhancing Safety, Efficiency and Sustainability in Marine Activities’.
