The Full Story

The Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) in association with the National Chest Hospital (NCH) will host a Lung Cancer Medical Symposium on Thursday (November 22).

The event is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm at the NCH on Barbican Road, St. Andrew.

Speaking at a recent JIS Think Tank, NCH Senior Medical Officer, Dr. Terry Baker, explained that the symposium aims to enlighten members of the health profession about some of the specifics of lung cancer care.

“This is so that we can underscore the various modalities that are available and the fact that we need to be more vigilant in looking out for patients with lung cancer,” she said.

Four speakers are scheduled to present. They are Oncologist, Dr. Sheray Ward-Chin, who will look at advances in the treatment and management of patients with lung cancer; Consultant General and Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. Patrice Pinkney, who will outline surgical options in the treatment of patients; Oncologist and Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Dr. Margaret Dingle Spence; and Oncologist, Dr. Garfield Forbes, will examine some of the ethical issues that surround managing patients.

Dr. Baker is imploring colleagues within the medical profession to attend and benefit from the information-sharing that will take place. “It promises to be a very enlightening and informative evening.

All speakers are specialists within the field, so we invite the health professionals to come out and to learn” she said. The symposium is among activities organised by JCS to mark Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November.

A 5K run/walk was held in Ocho Rios, St. Ann on November 18; and the JCS is collaborating with the Nigerian High Commissioner to Jamaica and Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Diva Foundation to host the premiere of the film “Fifty” at the Palace Cineplex, Sovereign Centre at 8:00 pm on November 29.
