Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, is encouraging citizens to be on the lookout for vector breeding sites as they carry out Labour Day activities around the home on Monday (May 24).

“Although we are heavily focused on the coronavirus (COVID-19) while we carry out our clean-up activities, it is not the only concern. Mosquitoes and rodents also pose a threat to our health, and special attention should be paid to the breeding sites for these vectors while carrying out Labour Day activities at home this year,” she told JIS News.

Mosquitoes and rats are two common vectors that transmit deadly viruses. Mosquitoes are known to transmit dengue, chikungunya and Zika, while rats transmit leptospirosis, hantavirus and salmonella.

Minister Grange noted that old appliances and furniture in the yard,  and potted plants provide breeding grounds for vectors.

“The theme for National Labour Day is ‘Promoting a Clean and Healthy Environment’, so we want citizens to stay home, stay safe and clean up their spaces and be on the lookout for these vectors,” she said.

Traditionally observed on May 23, Labour Day is being marked on May 24 this year as the designated date falls on a Sunday.
