The Full Story

The Local Governance (Amendment) Act will be sent to a Committee of Parliament for its consideration and deliberation.

This was noted by Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives, Hon, Derrick Smith, today (November 9), after opposition was raised to the passage of the Bill.

The Bill was laid on the table of the Lower House by Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie.

The legislation seeks to make clearer, procedures for the alteration of boundaries of existing municipalities and provide for the revocation of the Municipalities (Portmore) Order, 2015.

It states that councillors entitled to sit on the Council of a Municipal Corporation shall not include councillors entitled to sit on the Council of a City Municipality or Town Municipality of the parish.

The Bill also makes amendments to the Poor Relief Act, consequent on the enactment of the Local Governance Act.
