The Full Story

Citizens of Lluidas Vale in St. Catherine are celebrating the refurbishing of their community centre, which was the parish project for Labour Day 2024.

Scores of residents turned out to participate in the workday, which included the building of an access ramp, repair and replacement of fixtures, painting, cleaning, bushing, drain excavation and other activities.

They were joined by volunteers from the Social Development Commission (SDC), Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Jamaica Defence Force (JDC), and Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC).

President of the Lluidas Vale Community Development Committee, Tatrice Cato, said the residents are grateful for the work done.

With the refurbishing of the facility, residents once again have a comfortable space for community meetings and other social activities.

“We are very elated that this is happening in our community. We want to revamp the centre so that the youth can have a  real recreational experience,” said community member Rita Kay Sloue.

Constable Shantel C. Powell, said the JCF is pleased to participate in the Labour Day project, noting that a big part of the work of the police is community engagement.

She also welcomed the level of community spirt and unity displayed.

Constable Powell said the community centre “is a great place to host police youth club functions and to engage young people in development programmes”.

Mayor of Spanish Town, Councillor Norman Scott, who led the day’s activities,  said he was “extremely satisfied” with the participation from the community members and the volunteers.

“They turned out in their usual numbers to put in some hard work,” he noted.

Labour Day 2024 was observed under the theme ‘Ramp up the access… show that you care’, with a focus on people with disabilities, the elderly and the vulnerable.
