In the wake of Hurricane Beryl which impacted Jamaica on July 3, 2024, and the subsequent flooding due to heavy rainfall, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS) continues to lead the national humanitarian response to assist residents in affected communities across the island.
As of 5:00 p.m. yesterday, the MLSS has confirmed that 71 shelters are still in operation, accommodating over 717 individuals.
The Ministry remains persistent in its efforts to ensure the swift distribution of relief supplies.
To date, 3,769 food packages, 769 tarpaulins, 375 mattresses, and 479 hygiene packages, along with other essential supplies, have been distributed to shelters and affected households across the island, particularly in the most severely impacted regions of St. Thomas, Manchester, St Elizabeth and Clarendon.
The Ministry’s Parish teams supported by the Poor Relief Department, the Salvation Army, Jamaica Red Cross, the Adventist Disaster Relief Agency (ADRA) and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) continue to deliver relief supplies, and to conduct damage assessment to homes, in order to determine the level of support to be provided to householders in effecting repairs.
The Ministry encourages all affected persons and communities to contact their parish disaster organizations, the MLSS parish offices or the MLSS Customer Contact Centre at 876- 922-8000-13 for assistance.
