Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, is calling on vendors, business operators and consumers in the Nelson Mandela Park area to properly dispose of garbage to prevent rodent infestation.
He made the call at a press conference on Thursday (December 5) at the KSAMC’s offices in downtown Kingston, where he announced that the park and surroundings will be sanitised as part of the measures to rid the area of rats.
The Mayor said that the issue is not limited to vending activities, pointing out that it also involves how businesses and the general public dispose of garbage and other waste.
He said everyone must take responsibility for keeping the area clean, noting that improper waste disposal and littering contribute to the problem.
“It is a problem we can only solve together. We ask all business owners, vendors, and members of the public to properly dispose of waste and be mindful of how we manage garbage in this busy area. By doing so, we can create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for all users,” Mayor Swaby said.
He informed that a recent meeting was held with vendors in the Half-Way Tree area to discuss important steps to improve safety and the cleanliness of the area.
He said the meeting included representatives from the KSAMC, Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) and the Kingston and St. Andrew Public Health Department.
