The Full Story

The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) today (February 8), recognised six individuals who have given yeoman service to the parish’s shelter management programme.

The recipients have collectively rendered 153 years of service to the programme. They are Winston Jackson (posthumously), Derrick Coward, Alberta Jackson, Cynthia Bravo, Carolyn Evans and Iris Jack.

They were recognised during a ceremony following the council meeting at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston.

Mayor of Kingston, Senator Councillor Delroy Williams, commended the volunteers for their years of dedicated service to the programme and the Municipality.

“It’s always good to know that we have a group of persons within communities stretched across the municipality who are always… committed to service in times of need,” he said.

He noted that these individuals are not only concerned about their families or friends during times of disaster.

“During times of disaster, many persons would focus on families and ensure that their families are okay, ensuring their neighbours are okay and their friends. In this case, you have to leave families and neighbours in times of impending disasters and serve the general municipality. This is giving,” he said.

Commending the awardees, Ranking Member, Minority Side of the Council, Parish Disaster Preparedness and Public Health Committee, KSAMC, Councillor Neville Wright, pointed out that they have given sterling service.

“We certainly want to convey sincere gratitude to them for their contribution towards the safety of our citizenry across the Municipality,” he said.

Vice Chairman, Parish Disaster Preparedness and Public Health Committee, KSAMC, Councillor Beverley Prince, encouraged other persons to volunteer to the programme.

In an interview with JIS News, Dwayne Jackson, who accepted the award on his father’s behalf, expressed gratitude for the recognition by the Council.

He described his father as a selfless individual who was always giving back.

“The family is elated and happy that he has been recognised for his efforts,” he told JIS News.
