The Full Story
The Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Council (KSAC) is calling on the Kingston business community to contribute to its project to create a ‘Family Park’ downtown.
The $50 million facility, to be situated at St. William Grant Park, will provide space for fun, relaxation and togetherness, while promoting and celebrating the importance of the family unit. Ground was broken for the project on May 8.
The Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund has contributed $20 million to the undertaking.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Andrew Swaby, expressed gratitude to the CHASE Fund and appealed for other entities to partner with the KSAC on this “very worthwhile cause.”
“This is a major initiative of the KSAC, which is aimed at improving family life in Kingston and providing a space for children to play, express and enjoy themselves, while learning about our African heritage and rich Jamaican culture,” he noted.
Councillor Swaby was addressing the monthly meeting of the KSAC held on Tuesday (May 10) in Council Chambers, downtown Kingston.
He also appealed for members of the public to donate plastic bottles, which will be used to create art and other pieces for the play area. He said that just over three million containers are needed.
Councillor Swaby informed that Tile City and the Kingston Parish Church have agreed to provide space to store the bottles, and urged Councillors to identify areas within their divisions for collection and storage.
The contribution from CHASE will be used for the building of the Mother Hen Corner, Journey to Africa and The Seashell Amphitheatre.
Additional funding is needed for creation of the Mosaic Space, Reggae Avenue, The Main Family Monument, Tuck Shop, Walking Trail, and restrooms.
