The Full Story

The Hon. Karl Samuda has been appointed Minister of Education, Youth and Information.

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, made the announcement during a meeting with Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) Board members on Wednesday (June 17) at the institution’s Palisadoes Park address in Kingston.

Minister Samuda has served as Minister without Portfolio with responsibility for Education since March 2019. Prior to that, he was Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation.

The Prime Minister, who had oversight of the Education Ministry, had appointed Minister Samuda to deal with the Ministry’s day-to-day operations.

“I decided to appoint the Minister without Portfolio to deal with the day-to-day running of the Ministry, but for those areas that were posing a challenge it required the direct and deliberate attention of the Prime Minister to ensure that the organisational and institutional changes that should be effective, were effective,” Mr. Holness noted.

“I believe I’m now at a stage where I can safely say that we can now have the Ministry being fully run by a Minister of Education, who will be overseeing everything. My role in ensuring that structures are in place – I’ve completed that role, and I can retreat to now looking at other areas that need attention for strengthening,” he added.
