The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is set to achieve significant savings and operational efficiencies with the recent addition of 100 new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to its fleet.
“With these 100 buses on CNG we will be spending 200 per cent less on fuel, whilst solving the long-standing issues regarding diesel oil affecting the efficiency of the JUTC,” Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz explained.
He was speaking at the recent formal handover ceremony for the buses, at the Portmore JUTC Depot, in St. Catherine.
“Presently, it would cost $60,000 to fill one Diesel Dragon Bus, compared to the $20,000 it will cost to fill one of these CNG buses. So, we save $40,000 per bus. That is $4,000,000 saved each time we fuel these 100 buses,” the Minister added.
The Government has also expanded the CNG capacity of the Portmore Depot from one pump to three, effectively increasing the JUTC’s refuelling capabilities by 300 per cent.
This shift to CNG, which is generally less expensive than diesel, addresses other issues within the JUTC, including diesel theft and high fuel costs.
“We must protect these buses; they are equipped with cameras and other features, but we must protect our investments. I will be lobbying for stronger penalties for persons who seek to damage and destroy this huge investment,” Minister Vaz said, expressing confidence in the support from his colleagues and the public.
The JUTC’s investment in CNG technology not only promises considerable financial savings, but also reflects a commitment to improving public transportation while safeguarding taxpayer dollars.
The addition of the buses is a pivotal move towards modernising Jamaica’s public transportation system and enhancing the overall passenger experience.
