May 16, 2009

The Full Story

The Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) will be unveiling a monument in honour of late former Prime Minister, the late Most Hon. Hugh Lawson Shearer ON, OJ on Monday, May 18, 2009.
The unveiling will be held in the National Heroes Park in the section reserved for former Prime Ministers, on what would have been Mr. Shearer’s 86th birthday. Guest speaker will be Prime Minister, the Hon Bruce Golding.
The monument ‘Tower of Stature’, was designed by Paul Thorbourne of the architectural firm, Paul Thorbourne and Associates, and constructed by Incomparable Enterprise Ltd. Mr. Thorbourne also served as project manager.
The monument drawings were displayed to the public in February of 2008 when the JNHT announced Thorbourne as winner of the design competition. Thorbourne’s design ‘Tower of Stature’ was the unanimous choice of the judges, that included representation from the Jamaica Labour Party(JLP), the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, the Jamaica Institute of Architects, the Jamaica Institute of Engineers, the Jamaica Guild of Artists and the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. It also had the approval of Mr. Shearer’s widow, Professor Denise Eldemire-Shearer.
The monument has two intersecting wings, widening as they rise, signifying Mr. Shearer’s dual achievements as trade unionist and politician while recalling his tall physical stature. There are grooves at points along the monument identifying career landmarks of the former Prime Minister.
The monument was funded by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
